A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE CLUB

The Letchworth Model Aeronautical Society, LMAS, has been in continuous existence since it was formed by a group of enthusiastic model builders and flyers on October 24th 1938. It is therefore one of the oldest established model flying clubs in the country. The inaugural meeting was held at the Garden City Hotel, long since demolished, which was at the corner of Station Road and Norton Way South, Letchworth. Our current President is one of the surviving members of that meeting.

The club exists to promote the hobby of building and flying model aircraft. Space does not permit us to accommodate any but the smallest type of free-flight model, but radio-controlled models are most favoured because of the availability and reliability of modern radio control equipment.

We are very fortunate to have two flying sights, both of which are within the Letchworth Garden City boundaries, and are proud to have carried out our activities within Letchworth continually since the formation of the club: The silent flight site is at Wilbury Hill Farm which is on the outskirt of Letchworth. It has a small club hut where members can meet as they choose. It also provides facilities for the storage of Club equipment, and is used for model building, Committee meetings, etc.

The powered flight (internal combustion, electric powered, etc.) site utilises the facilities of the Letchworth Rugby Club located behind the North Herts Leisure Centre in Baldock Road. It has its own car park and space to fly powered models of various types. Flying takes place here on Sunday afternoons from about 2pm, weather and Rugby permitting.

The Club has a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and Committee, all being elected at the Annual General Meeting. There are a set of Rules and a Code of Practice which govern the Club and its members' activities. The Club is run on friendly lines, and the majority of members are the type who enjoy the leisurely flying and social contact that it offers. We welcome all interested flyers, experienced or not. Experienced members are always available to help the novice flyer to learn safely. Members are insured upon joining the Club against liability arising from third party damage and injury caused by their models.

We are always happy to help those interested in model flying in any way we can. If you are interested in joining or would like more information please email us at
info@lmas.org.uk or come along to the power site on a Sunday afternoon.
